THE War of the Rebellion was formally opened by theattack of the rebels in firing upon Fort Sumter, Charles-ton harbor, South Carolina, April 12, 1861. After two daysbombardment of the fort, General Anderson, earh^ on the morn-ing of April 14th, surrendered the garrison of less than 100 April 15th, Abraham Lincoln, President of the UnitedStates, issued a proclamation, calling for seventy-five thousandmilitia from the several States, to serve a term of three monthsto suppress the rebellion. Pennsvlvania furnished her quota offourteen regiments, and this number was further increased totwenty-five regiments. Such was the patriotic ardor of thepeople, that the services of about thirty additional regiments,tendered by the Keystone State, were refijsed. No matterwhat side the people took on political questions
