THE transfer ticket seems to be one of those thingswhich no amount of study and planning on thepart of the manager can so perfect as to abso-lutely protect the company. The local conditions of onecitv often render impracticable a plan well suited to theneeds of another town. While there are places where. 126 rATERSON, N. J. TRANSFER. the transfer cannot be used with safety, in the majority ofcases it is found profitable to the company and a greatconvenience to the public, despite its many bad featuresThe one golden rule which applies to all places and conditions, however, is to make the time limit just as shortas possible and thus prevent scalping. The ticket used at Paterson, N. J., is the invention ofF. R. Greene, of the Chicago CityRailway, and is proving very satisfac-tory there and elsewhere. In this par-ticular case the conductor indicates bya pencil mark or punch to which ofthe several lines named at the right,the transfer is made and by means ofa brass clip tears the ticket to indicatethe hour and quarter hour at which itsusefulness as a legal fare tender ceasesto exist.
