In 1813, he com-manded in the campaign against the Creek Indians in Geor-gia, and two years later the army under his commanddefeated the British forces before New Orleans. His stayin New Orleans was marked by the unrelenting sternnesswith which he enforced martial law. In 1818, Jackson received the command against theSeminoles, and three years later was appointed MilitaryGovernor of Florida. Jacksons nomination for the Presidency came in 1822,and he was successfully elected in 1828. In 1832, he wasre-elected by a large majority over Clay, his chief years which followed his retirement into private lifewere quiet and uneventful. He died near Nashville, June8, 1845.
