Bone density scanner. Hospital radiographer operating a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanner being used to measure a patient's bone mineral density (BMD). This technique compares the results from two X-ray beams of differing energy to enable measurement of the BMD. It is typically used to diagnose and assess the effects of osteoporosis in women.
