Martian surface. Artwork of a mesa on the surface of Mars. A mesa is a flat-topped steep hill formed by erosion of the surrounding plain. They are found on Earth in arid places such as Monument Valley in the USA. Thin wisps of cloud can be seen in the sky. Mars' clouds are made up mainly of carbon dioxide ice and some water crystals. The average surface temperature on Mars is around -60 degrees Celsius.
