Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, litter, plastic sachets and paper cups discarded at refreshment station by runners, 2019, Comrades Marathon

Claimed to be the oldest ultramarathon, founded by WW1 veteran, Vic Clapham, in 1921, the 94th, Comrades Marathon, was run on Jun 9, 2019. Over 20 000, men and women, lined up 05:30, at the Durban City Hall to start the 87 km run to Pietermaritzburg, capital of KwaZulu-Natal. Elite male athletes complete the foot race in 5hrs 30min, women in 6hrs. Numbers vary, but along the route runners can expect to see 400 000 spectators, supporters and the curious. After 12 hrs, the Cut is signalled by firing a gun. In the last 30 min National TV audience numbers skyrocket as viewers watch the drama of runners through sheer willpower at the end of their physical and mental ability, trying to make the Cut. About 14 000 runners finish The Ultimate Human Race. 41 images of the author document the 2019 event between the 36-39 km mark.
