Baby Audouin's Gull (Larus audouinii) at nest, with an unhatched egg next to it
The Audouin's Gull is one of the rarest gulls in the world, restricted to the Mediterranean and the western coast of Saharan Africa. It breeds on small islands colonially or alone. In the late 1960s, its population was of only 1,000 pairs but since then it has established new colonies, but still remains rare with a population of about 10,000 pairs. Unlike many large gulls it rarely scavenges, but is a specialist fish eater, and is therefore strictly coastal and pelagic.
