His intercourse with them wasboth affable and dignified. His portrait at the Gov-ernors mansion, from which the accompanying wasmade, represents him as having a swarthy complex-ion, high cheek bones, broad forehead, piercing bladeeyes and straight black hair. He was a liberal patron of the Illinois College atJacksonville, a member of its Board of Trustees, anddied, after a short illness, Jan. 15, 1844, a devotedmember of the Presbyterian Church, leaving a wifebut no children.
