A late 19th Century illustration of Frederick II (1194-1250), Holy Roman Emperor who as as king of Jerusalem, refusing entrance to the Holy Sepulchre, in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Traditionally, it contains Calvary, the site where Jesus was crucified and the empty tomb, believed to be where he was buried and resurrected. Frequently at war with the papacy, which was hemmed in between Frederick's lands in northern Italy and his Kingdom of Sicily to the south, he was excommunicated three times and vilified in pro-papal chronicles by Pope Gregory IX.
