Deville, Balard and Wurtz, French Chemists


Henri Ìätienne Sainte-Claire Deville (March 11, 1818 - July 1, 1881) was a French chemist. In 1841, he began his experiments with investigations of oil of turpentine and tolu balsam, in the course of which he discovered toluene. Antoine JÌ©rÌ«me Balard (September 30, 1802 - April 30, 1876) was a French chemist. In 1826 he discovered in seawater a substance which he recognized as a previously unknown element and named bromine. Charles Adolphe Wurtz (November 26, 1817 - May 10, 1884) was an Alsatian French chemist. He is best remembered for his decades-long advocacy for the atomic theory and for ideas about the structures of chemical compounds. No photographer credited, undated.
