a sign for Chislehurst, Kent

The sign is double-sided and comprises an oval medallion, with a relief depicting the knighting of Thomas Walsingham IV, Lord of the Manor, at Scadbury on 20/21 July 1597, by Queen Elizabeth I. Above the scene is a red shield, bearing the White Horse of Kent and the motto 'Invicta' below. Beneath the scene, on a cross-beam, is the village name CHISLEHURST in raised lettering. At each end of this beam is a red and white Tudor rose emblem. There is a lead capping with a scalloped edge on the top. The scene is enclosed by a surround of carved oak leaves, symbolising the Green Boughs or Invicta legend of Kent. It surmounts a square wooden post painted brown with mouldings or grooves all the way up, which tapers up to two wooden brackets supporting the name block. The post is set in a square concrete base, more or less a cube, with large knapped flintstones set all over it. This base is composed of flint from the local chalk, with four corner stones from an old house in East Kent (not specified). On the south-east side of the base is a stone commemorating the Coronation, and beneath it are three bricks from Scadbury. The medallion is intricately carved and painted. The relief depicts Queen Elizabeth I in a blue and white dress and red cloak, knighting Thomas Walsingham who is kneeling on one knee with head bowed, and wearing a striped doublet and hose in red and green. They are in front of a half-timbered house with a lawn in front and a tree to the right. Above the scene is a red shield bearing the rearing white horse, the symbol of Kent, Set up to commemorates the Queen's accession to the throne in 1953. Designed by Thomas A. Bushell, Chislehurst’s foremost historian, and executed by John Easden, local craftsman. Cost met by public subscription. Unveiling performed on Coronation Day, 2 June 1953, by Miss Patricia Hornsby-Smith, PC, MP for Chislehurst and Sidcup, and Mr W. G. Fuller, Chairman of the Chislehurst and Sidcup UDC.
