Henry, having been a greatprotector of religion in Italy aswell as in Germany, is some-times found in Italian pictures,particularly at Florence, wherehe built and endowed the Church of San Miniato, so famousin Florentine story. STEPHEN OF HUNGARY. m St. Cunegunda standing with a lily between them,—emblemof their chastity. The most beautiful monument to the sanctity and glory ofthis imperial pair is their sepulchre or shrine in the Cathedralof Bamberg. They lie together, under a rich Gothic canopy,arrayed in their imperial robes ; the heads and hands are ad-mirably sculptured; but finer still are the bas-reliefs whichdecorate the pedestal or sarcophagus on which they are four subjects:—1. Cunegunda undergoes the fieryordeal, a beautiful composition of eight figures. 2. Cunegundapays, out of her dower, the architects and masons who arebuilding the Church of St. Stephen at Bamberg. 3. Henry, 1H Sacred andhis last illness, takes leave of his wife. 4. Henry receives the ±iei. Ajtlast offices from the Bishop of Bamberg. 5.
