George Fitzgerald Smoot (born 1945), US astrophysicist and cosmologist. Smoot works at the University of California, Berkeley, and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics with John C. Mather for the discovery of the black body form and anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the radiation left over from the Big Bang. This discovery was announced in 1992 using data from the COBE satellite. Smoot also holds the Albert Einstein Medal (2003) and the Oersted Medal (2009). Photographed in June 2011, at the Starmus Festival, the Canary Islands.
