These are nose pumps operated by the livestock. As the animal drinks from the pump bowl, they push against a lever, which in turn operates a piston and diaphragm which pumps more water a nearby stream or river. They are useful in sensitive area such as wet wildflower meadows, where they prevent the animals drinking from rivers and damaging the riverbanks.
