This is a remote part of northern Pakistan through which runs the Karakoram Highway or friendship road that links China to Pakistan The people of Hunza are Ishmaili and these lands have also been known as Shangri la as they reflect the western perception of an idyllic land Life here is hard although the people do have a reputation for longevity There is little rainfall which lends much of the land a dusty brown moonscape appearance and crops are grown by irrigating fields with glacial melt water This picture was taken using a digital camera without its infra red filter and the result is the same as traditional black and white infrared film It produces a surreal grainy image with darkened skies extra contrast and often a darker slightly ethereal mood This was taken in July 2005
