Hugh Rowland erected and operated a carding and fullingmill in 1826. It was situated below Second street betweenMarket street and Strawberry alley. The power to operate themill was a tramp-wheel rotated by two old horses. It was thecustom for women from the country districts to ride into town,with a slieet or blanket wrapped around a crop of wool, attachedto the horn of their saddles. They had it carded at Rowlandsmill to make it read} for the spinning wheel, which was in thosedays an indispensable implement in every well regulated Rowland sold out
