Porneiopathology : a popular treatise on venereal and other diseases of the male and female genital system : with remarks on impotence, onanism, sterility, piles, and gravel, and prescriptions for their treatment . puts on a black appearance, andif the ligature be not removed or di-vided, mortification takes place, andhe tip or more of the penis sloughs off or dies state of the prepuce is called j/araphymosis: it some-•.iiaes happens to young lads, who, having an indicatedopening of the foreskin, endeav-or to uncover the glans: they suc-ceed, but are unable to pull theprepuce back again. They eithertake no further notice of it, orelse become frightened, but con-ceal the accident they have com-mitted : in a few hours, the partsbecome painful, swell, and all thephenomena above detailed en-sue. The annexed diagram exhib-its the foreskin in a state of para-phymosis. The next proceeding which will probably be induced, will be an extension of the inflammation to the bladder:the symptoms are a frequent desire to make water, andoccasionally ulceration of the membrane lining the blad-der follows, when a quantity of muco-purulent matter isdischarged, which, mingling with the urine ^ives it the. Now and then the bladder takes onanother form of disordered function: the patient will beSeized with retention of urine, that is, a total inability todischarge his water, except by the aid of the catheter. Anew and most perplexing feature about this stage of theproceeding is perceived : it is what is called chordee. Theexisting irritation excites the penis to frequent erections, which are of the most painful nature. The penis is bentdownward; the occasion is, the temporary agglutiniza-tion of some of the cells of the corpora cavernosa throughinflammation, and the distension of the open ones by thearterial blood, thereby putting the adherent cells on thestretch, and so constituting the curve, and giving rise tothe pain.
