GRIGGS, Thomas Cott. one of the presidents of the 2nd quorum of Seven-ty and a member of the Sunday SchoolUnion Board, was born June 19, 1845, inDover, county of Kent, England. Hismother having joined the Church, he,. while quite young, also became interest-ed in the teachings of the Elders, andwas baptized May 17, 1856, in the Straitsof Dover by Elder Thos. Liez. Twoyears before this he was renderedfatherless. Together with his motherhe emigrated to America in 1856, cross-ing the Atlantic in the ship Wellfleet,and arrived in Boston, Mass., July 11,1856. There was a branch of theChurch in Boston at that time and theboy and his mother remained there forseveral years, and there Thomas first became interested in music. Some timeafter his arrival in Boston a brass bandwas organized there composed ofChurch members, led by Elder JohnEardley, and with it the young manbecame identified as an active and en-thusiastic performer.
