Large intestine. Endoscope view of the interior or the transverse portion of the colon, the major part of the large intestine. The triangular form of the colon is due to the muscles of its walls, which contract to force digested food along its length. This is the second section of the colon, and lies horizontally beneath the stomach. It is linked to the ascending colon, which carries food from the small intestine, and the descending colon, which takes food to the sigmoid colon and the rectum. The primary function of the colon is to absorb water from digested food.
