Young boy pushes aside red curtain in 17th century trompe l’oeil painting. On the staircase of the Hôtel de Châteaurenard at Aix-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France. The painting is by Brussels-born Court artist Jean Daret (1613-1668) who worked at Aix in 1654, six years before the Hôtel de Châteaurenard became the temporary home of King Louis XIV (1638 - 1715).

This trompe l’oeil painting on the stairs of the mansion in Rue Gaston de Saporta is among several ingenious illusionist works painted here by Brussels-born Court artist Jean Daret (1613-1668). He worked at Aix in 1654, six years before the house became the temporary home of King Louis XIV.
