Fig. 4 illustrates the application of nitrogen gas to eggs enclosed in plastic. When eggs are held for extended periods prior to incubation, it is important to extend the incubation period to 22 days before chicks are removed from the hatcher. The best atmosphere for eggs in extended storage has probably not been established. High concentration of oxygen apparently has no harmful effect on eggs stored for 1 week or less, but severely affects the hatchability of eggs stored for longer periods.
