The man on his buoy (L'Homme sur sa bouée) by German artist Stephan Balkenhol in the middle of the Somme river in Amiens (Somme), France
Stephan Balkenhol is a German sculptor born February 10, 1957 in Fritzlar (Hesse). Professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe since 1992, he is one of the most important sculptors in Germany. In Amiens, three oak statues are installed in the Saint-Leu district: "The woman in the green dress" and "The man in the red shirt" are each leaning against a house wall while "The Man on his buoy" floats on the Somme at the Dodane bridge, looking at the two other statues. They were initially produced and installed in 1993 as part of a public order. This triptych represents the links of the city with water. The Man on His Buoy has become a very popular statue in Amiens as daring young people regularly swim towards the work of art to dress it in t-shirts. The statue was nevertheless degraded on May 13, 2018 by rugby players from Marcq-en-Baroeul after a match. Very damaged at the level of the base and the feet, this work was restored by the artist and is now kept at the Musée de Picardie. In order to restore the three works to their site, Stephan Balkenhol created a new Man on his buoy, this time in painted aluminum and also restored the two wall statues. The three works were reinstalled in their places on May 23 and 24, 2019.
