An artist's impression of Stegosaurus (foreground) and Tyrannosaurus. These ancient reptiles lived in North America during the Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, between 195 and 65 million years ago. Stegosaurus was a herbivore. It was protected by its bony plates, spurs and spines and had strong hindlegs. It probably returned to four-footed locomotion from the bipedal gait of its ancestors. Tyrannosaurus was carnivorous. It walked and jumped on its hindlegs and stood about five metres tall. The forelegs were small and poorly developed.
