In Wal-dins Ridge and Powells Moun-tain this elevation is about 400feet—sometimes as much as 600feet—above water level in thecreeks. In fact, so greatwill be this quantity tliat many years must elapse, afterregular mining operations are commenced, before it becomesnecessary to mine below water level. Brown Iron Ore. Brown hematite shows more conspicuously at Bales orBowling Green Forge than at any other point so far as devel-oped. Here it shows a width of twenty feet by an unknowndepth. In the ridges to the south and east of White Shoals inPowells Ptiver there are considerable surface quantities ofmanganiferous brown ores. The ores at Bales or BowlingGreen Forge are in the Lower Silurian limestones, and maybe indicative of those sulphureted strata below which yieldsuch quantities of zinc blende farther down Powells Biver inTennessee. An examination of the south face of Waldins Bidge andPowells Mountain reveals the presence of brown ores belong-in
