The supernova is the bright star-like dot just above the galaxy. It is a type 1a supernova, produced when a white dwarf accretes matter from a companion star until it reached a mass at which it exploded catastrophically. NGC 1559 is a small galaxy some 50 million light years from Earth in the constellation reticulum.
