Church of Virgin Mary of the Foreigners in Plakada Agiou square, Corfu Old Town, Greece

The Church of Virgin Mary of the Foreigners was built by the priest Nikodemos, whose origin was from Epirus, for the refugees from Epirus, who ended up in Corfu because of the persecutions during Ottoman occupation. It is a three-aisled basilica. Its dominant features are “ourania”, a work of (18th century), as well as the altar of the church which is considered as one of the most impressive, gold plated altars in Corfu. The old altar of the church was replaced and restored in 1875 by Italian technicians. Another distinctive feature of the church is the icon “Tree of Jesse”s with miniature paintings of the prophets and their words in parchments which refer to the rival of the Messiah.
