The dress is almostexactly like that of the men, except that thematerials are generally liner, and the sashwhich confines the garments to the waist isvery broad, and gathered up into a largeand peculiar knot, almost exactly like thepanier of European fashion. Both sexeswear stockings made like mittens, and hav-ing a separate place for the reception of thegreat toe. Without this provision theywould not be able to wear the peculiar san-dals and clogs of the country, which areheld on the foot by a Y-shaped strap, thefork of which passes between the great andthe second toe. The clogs that are worn bythe women very much resemble those of theMalays in general shape, and, awkward asthey look, are easily manageable after a littlepractice.
