Restored Norman (c 1100) font of Pentewan stone inside St Winwaloe's Church, Gunwalloe, Cornwall, England, UK: the broad arrows represent the Trinity.
The restored Norman (c 1100) font of Pentewan stone inside St Winwaloe's Church, Gunwalloe, Cornwall, England, UK. The broad arrows carved on the bowl represent the Trinity (some sources say a stylized tree of life). The painted panels on the door behind the font once formed part of the early C16th rood screen, traditionally said to be made of wood from the wreck of the treasure ship St Anthony of Padua (or Lisbon) which sank at Gunwalloe on the 19th of January 1527, en route from Flanders to Portugal. The figures are apostles, that on the R probably St Jude holding a halberd. The church has two fonts, this one was dug up from the graveyard. The original church here was mentioned in the C11th Domesday Book.
