These con-ditions give equatorial forests, known as Selvas, whichhere are denser than the Congo forests. The same kindof vegetation is also found along the north-east andnorth-west coasts, and along the east coast of eastern slopes of the Andes, in the area of theTrades, receive very great rainfall, and are heavilyforested, but not in such luxuriant profusion as on thelowlands. These forests are known as the Montana(see Fig. 117). There is another hot forest in the middle courses ofthe Paraguay and Parana rivers. This area is neitherso hot nor so wet as the Amazon forest, and the vege-tation may be described as sub-tropical. The mostimportant tree is the yerba mate, or Paraguay leaves and twigs are dried and afterwards groundinto a coa
