Fiesole, Tuscany, Italy: giant bronze head sculpture by Polish artist, Igor Mitoraj (1944 - 2014), in front of the Palazzo Pretorio or Town Hall in Piazza Mino da Fiesole. Igor Mitoraj is renowned for his monumental sculptures of the human head, some of them permanent installations and others temporary installations in a series of public locations. The latter included, in 2011, his sculpture of a giant blindfolded head, Eros Bendato Screpolato (Eros Blindfolded and Cracked), in the Valle dei Templi or Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. Mitoraj was born in Saxony to a Polish mother and French father. He studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts and then, in 1968, left Poland to study in Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Success with a personal exhibition in 1976 encouraged him to focus on sculpture and he was awarded the Prix de la sculpture de Montrouge. In 1989, he presented his works for the first time at the New York Academy of Art. Subsequently, he received prestigious commissions and his works were installed in Milan, Rome, London, Paris, Atlanta and Tokyo. In 2001, the President of the Italian Republic awarded him the Premio Vittoria De Sica.
