Basilica de Santa Maria. Gothic. XIII-XV centuries. Organ. Castello d'Empuries.


The Basilica of Santa Maria de Castelló d'Empúries is one of the most remarkable examples of Catalan Gothic, characterized by a large satisfied or living without transept hardly compartmentalized by cylindrical columns separating the three ships, which have a little different height. Denotes a certain influence of French Gothic, especially visible in the apse and buttresses. The ships are covered with vault with beautiful keystones. The three are polygonal apse with radiating chapels in the central apse. There are also chapels between buttresses of the aisles. The bell tower is an unique, built between the XII and XIII, still in the Romanesque style, and then integrated into the Gothic work. The temple was built between the late thirteenth century and early fifteenth in the same place where there had been a Romanesque church. The works began in 1261, directed by Ramon Xartres. Work continued during the fourteenth century masters Pere Torroella de Fluvià and Peter Tunyils and towards the beginning of the XV completed the main facade, with an outstanding cover Pointed between pinnacles, framed by two towers, of which only ' No one ended. During the seventeenth and eighteenth century, it was expanded in conjunction with the construction of two large lateral chapels, that of the Immaculate Heart (north side) and Our Lady of Sorrows (south) and the new sacristy. Inside the temple are preserved artwork notables, including the reredos of alabaster, the fifteenth century, the Romanesque font, medieval tombs and various organ of the beginning of XIX.
