Machrie Moor stone circles, Arran, Scotland, UK: Looking NE over the two concentric stone rings of Circle V at Moss Farm to the peak of Goat Fell. Part of a complex of Bronze Age ritual sites on the moor around Moss Farm. The circles appear have been sited on the natural amphitheatre of the moor with reference to prominent features on the NE skyline, particularly a prominent notch which is intersected by the midsummer solstice rising sun. Circle V has an outer ring of 15 boulders, an inner ring of eight & a ruined central burial cist. The site is known as Fingal's Cauldron Seat: one stone (front R) has a ledge with a natural hole where Fingal sat & tied his dog Bran. The sandstone pillars of Circles III (L) & II (R) are visible to the rear. Photo taken 8pm 20 June 1995.
