Foot muscles. Computer artwork of a view from below of some of the muscles and tendons (red and white) of the sole of the foot. These are the muscles anchored to the heel bone (calcaneus) that are used to bend (flex) the bones of the toes (phalanges). They are the flexor digitorum brevis muscle (middle four tendons), the abductor digiti minimi muscle (attached to little toe), and the abductor hallucis muscle (attached to the big toe). The latter two muscles also help stabilise and support the sides of the foot while standing or moving. The left foot (right) includes some of the ligaments (white) joining the bones.
