Coronary artery disease. Light micrograph of a section through a coronary (heart) artery showing an atheroma plaque on its inner surface. Atheroma is a fatty substance deposited on the inner walls of arteries in atherosclerosis. The deposits narrow the arteries, raising blood pressure. The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with blood. Obstruction of the coronary arteries may lead to part of the heart muscle being deprived of oxygen, which can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or angina pectoris (severe chest pain). A sedentary lifestyle, stress, cigarette smoking and obesity all increase the risk of developing heart disease. Magnification unknown.
