Emigrating toAmerica, he set sail from GloucesterApril 6, 1841, for Quebec, in charge ofa company of emigrating Saints, withwhom he traveled through Canada andarrived at Nauvoo July 8, 1841. Hesuffered in common with the Saintsgenerally the persecution and trials en-dured by the Church in Illinois untilthe expulsion in 1846. He then trav-eled to Winter Quarters, whence hewas called on a mission to travelamong the branches of the Church InIowa and Missouri, and on his returnfrom that mission he was called on amission to Europe, which he filled hon-. orably and returned in the fall of 1849,bringing with him a company of im-migrating Saints. He remained atKanesville till July 11, 1852, when hestarted for Utah. He arrived in SaltLake City Oct. 10, 1849, and almost im-mediately moved to Grantsville wherehe resided until his death, which oc-curred Oct. 14, 1873. During his resi-dence there he presided most of thetime as local Bishop or president. El-der Clark was a man who by his kind-ness and faithful labors gained theesteem of all with whom he was as-sociated. He was filled with integrity,spent his time in teaching and exhort-ing the Saints to faithfulness in thegospel, and as long as he had strengthto use his voice he bore powerful tes-timonies to the truth of the great Lat- 548 LATTER-DAY SAINT ter-day Work.
