Stamping machine and associated machinery used to crush gold bearing ore from the gold mining town of Lyell in the Buller Gorge West Coast New Zealand

Stamping machine and associated machinery used to crush gold bearing ore from the gold mining town of Lyell in the Buller Gorge West Coast New Zealand. The stamping mahine was used to crush the ore before the gold could be extracted in a variety of ways. The gold rush in Lyell started in 1862. Nothing now remains of the town. Its site is occupied by a camp site administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC). A dray road was built to connect Lyell to Seddonville, close to the West Coast beaches and some 85km (53ml) away. The track is now a mountain bike and tramping (hiking) trail. The battery, the Croesus Battery can be reached by a short trail. As well as the stamping machine there is a berden dish, which revolved to crush the quartz using heavy steel balls. An unusual turbine drove all the machinery.
