Large tornado darkening the sky. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that can form during the growth of a cumulonimbus (thunderstorm cloud). The largest tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms called supercells. Large tornadoes can be over kilometres across and travel many kilometres before dissipating. This tornado destroyed several houses and was rated an EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. An EF-4 tornado produces wind speeds between 267 and 322 kilometres per hour.
