Type. This species is near Barbodes maculatus Cuvier & Valenciennes (?=£. binotatus 0. & V.), but seems to differ in its slenderer third dorsal spine, with weaker and fewer serratures, andin coloration. Speci- mens from Sumatra identified as Barbodes vmculatus by Mr. Fowler agree with Bleeker's figure of the species in having the third dorsal spine strongly serrate to its base, in having the dorsal and caudal blotch indistinct, and in lacking a lateral body stripe. Mr. Fowler's specimens have the dorsal and anal dis- tinctly tipped with dusky, which is lacking in our specimens and in Bleeker's figure of Barbodes maculatus.
