Young elephants from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage play on the bank of the Maha Oya River. Twice daily the elephants are walked through the streets of Pinnawala from the orphanage to the river to bathe, much to the delight of tourists. Established in 1975 by the Sri Lankan government, the orphanage protects abandoned and orphaned elephants.
