Phycologia britannica, or, A History of British sea-weeds, containing coloured figures, generic and specific characters, synonymes, and descriptions of all the species of algae inhabiting the shores of the British Islands . pe the notice of mere am indebted to him for many specimens of the rarer kinds, andfor excellent observations on several of them ; and we may anti-cipate much interesting information from experiments which hehas commenced on the growth of Sea-weeds, in closed bottles ofsea-water. Already, he writes in a recent letter, he has succeededperfectly with Brgopsis plmuosa, which, in the space of a month, has grown considerably, and is now putting out beautiful sidebranches. This subject deserves more attention. I may men-tion that I have myself a plant of Griffithsia setacea, inclosed inApril 1846, which is now (Feb. 1848) in perfect health; thatthe water in the bottle has never been changed, and is as pureas when the plant was inclosed in it. No care has been takenof this plant, which stands on a library shelf. Fig. 1. Schizothrix Ckesswellii; tufts, in situ:—of the natural size. of filaments :—magnified: 3.
