The advantagewas so rapidly followed up as to endanger the turning of Warrensflank. But the timely arrival of reinforcements from the otherdivisions prevented the disaster. A sharp engagement, however,followed, and the enemy was forcgd to retire. As soon as the news of Warrens situation came to headquarters,General Meade ordered an attack all along the line, so as to relievehim. General Hancock was the only one who received the orderin time to attack before dark; and he immediately dashed upon theenemys skirmish line, captured their rifle-pits, and held them allnight.
