On 3 February 1931, a magnitude earthquake devastated the cities of Napier and Hastings, in New Zealand's Hawke’s Bay. At least 256 people died and many buildings were destroyed. Extensive rebuilding of the town followed in the next decade, the majority of this was done in the Art Deco style which was fashionable then.
