Asmember for Cornwall, he became Eliots firmest friend and stoutestsupporter, but for some unexplained motive he afterwards abandonedopposition, and from 1639 threw himself ardently into the Kingsservice. His local influence in Cornwall gave him an importancewhich was increased by his power of inspiring devotion in his fought at Hoptons side throughout the campaign of 1643 in thewest country at the head of his Cornishmen. The victories ofBradock Down and Stratton were largely due to Grenvilles gallantry,but he was killed at Lansdowne (July 5) in beating b
