Treating cancer with lasers. Computer artwork showing lasers focused on a cancerous tumour inside a patient's liver. Laser technology allows tumours deep inside the body to be destroyed without surgery and without damaging healthy tissue. The laser is focused on the tumour from many different angles, each time striking the malignant tissue but passing through areas of normal tissue. The combined dose received by the tumour is enough to destroy it. The laser kills the cancer cells either by generating heat (laser-induced thermotherapy) or by activating drugs.
