A small group of Romanian campaigners held a protest in Great Queen Street, Holborn, at the offices of RM Gold (Services) Limited which is planning to create a vast gold mine in the Rosia Montana area of Transylvania in Romania. The protesters are deeply concerned that the cyanide leeching processes used in the mine will cause long term environmental damage as contaminated waste could enter the ground water. They allege that the mine will use 13 times more cyanide than is permitted in the EU. In addition, the open cast mine will demolish four mountains and obliterate three villages as well as ancient Roman gold mining galleries. Protests have taken place in more than 50 cities around the world and more are planned.
