Birds leaving the loft for exercise. This photograph, taken by Lt. Lyon on May 1, 1919, captures hero pigeons and other birds from overseas. The pigeons were instrumental in delivering messages during World War I. The birds were regularly trained and exercised to stay fit and prepared for their important tasks.
