On the death of his father in 1866, whenhe came into possession of the Case estate, he made his life-longfriend, Henry G. Abbey, general manager and confidential agentof the property. He was thus enabled, until his death in 1880,to devote himself to his literary and mathematical studies. Thestory of this beautiful friendship was well told by Judge JamesD. Cleveland, president of the board of trustees, in his addressat the Case School commencement in 1891: Mr. Abbey relieved Mr. Case of all business cares and wasmost eminently qualified for the duties which he had been calledto undertake. He had lived in Cleveland from his infancy, andunited great strength of mind to a thorough study of the law, long experience in business, knowledge of the world and a culti-vated taste in literature. He had been a practicing lawyer inMilwaukee, clerk of the Wisconsin House of Representatives
