In 1869 he taught church history in theUnion theological seminary and has ever since beenconnected with that institution, becoming successive-ly professor of theological cyclopsedia and Christiansymbolism (1870); professor of Hebrew and the con-nate languages (1873>; professor of Greek exegesis(1874), and in 1887, after the death of Roswell , professor of church history. The differ-ent positions, thus mentioned, give an inadequateidea of Dr. SchafEs energy and \ersatility. He hasnever been content to do only one thing. Thus helectured at Mercersburg in nearly all departments oftheology, being at one time the only professor. Heedited the monthly Deutcher Kirchenfreund, thefirst German theological periodical established inAmerica, which he founded in 1848, until 1855; the Mercersburg Review from 1857 until 1863; andthen Evangelische Zeugnisse, Philadelphia, Pa.,. f ^^^ from 1868 till 1866. He was chairman of the iwocommittees of his denomination which prepared anew liturgy for the German Reformed church (1857),and a German hymn book (1859). In 1854 he repre-sented the German churches in the ecclesiastical dietat Frankfort, and at the Swiss pastoral conference atBasel. In 1862 he lectured on church history at An-dover, Mass., and later at Hartford, Conn. In 1865he visited Europe in the interest of Sunday obser-vance and Sunday-schools.
