Phentermine. Molecular model of the appetite suppressant phentermine. This drug is used to help obese patients lose weight by decreasing their appetite. It works by increasing the secretion of hormones involved in the 'fight-or-flight' response, including adrenalin and serotonin. These chemicals act on the nervous system to block hunger signals from reaching the brain. Phentamine can be habit-forming and so is only used for short-term treatment (3 to 6 weeks). Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (white), hydrogen (purple) and nitrogen (blue).
