The centerof the river was still open and the ice inshorewas not so thick that a resolute steamboat couldnot crush through it. Soon after Tom and Cissyhad taken their places to see the spectacle, afire-boat came up the river and forced its waythrough the ice till it stopped almost alongsidethe burning building. Leaving this boat to at-tend to the warehouse, the firemen ashore turnedtheir attention chiefly to preventing the spreadof the conflagration.
